Contemporary Abstract Painting
Painting is where observation gives way to instinct. I am drawn to abstraction, texture, colour and movement, often beginning with something that has caught my attention - a landscape, an organic form, a memory, a feeling or simply the relationship between two colours.
My work is influenced by both the natural world and the internal landscapes we carry within us. Nature may appear recognisably, or it may be reduced to shape, rhythm, texture and colour. At other times, the work becomes more personal, exploring questions of identity, belonging, change and the ways our experiences leave their mark.
I work through layering, gestural mark-making and experimentation, allowing paintings to shift as they develop. I may cover something I love, scrape something back, turn the canvas, or follow an unexpected mark in a completely different direction. I am interested in the tension between intention and surrender. Between having an idea and allowing the painting to become something I hadn't anticipated.
For me, painting isn't necessarily about reproducing what I see. It is about discovering what else might be there.
